Muted morning after overdue rain in Kabul

Thin, freezing rains over the last few days scrubbed the smoky skies, generating snow, fog and muted light just outside Kabul, Afghanistan, near the familiar palace ruins. Ground parched for months sucked up the moisture, and the colors of the dead vegetation, the soil, and the stones almost throbbed, or so it seemed this morning.
