Encountering Shiva outside the Amber Fort

JAIPUR, India--Shiva, “The Auspicious One,” a major Hindu deity, was represented on the last day of a festival I happened upon last week on the grounds of the Amber Fort about 10 kilometers outside the city. In the few minutes i lingered, the child portraying Shiva was expressionless while his partner collected the rupees. The Amber Rajs ruled this section of Rajasthan in northwestern India from the 16th through the middle of the 18th century, when Amber was abandoned and the capital moved to Jaipur.
