Reliable power generates village's independence

Three men walk their donkey by a electrical power pole and through the bazaar at Istalif some 50 kilometers northwest of Kabul. Istalif, unlike many remote Afghan communities, has reliable energy thanks to a micro-hydropower plant on the Istalif River. Remote HydroLight, a private company, trains, manufactures and installs these plants, usually stand alone, in mountainous Afghanistan. Remote HydroLight also operates a lodge about 6 kilometers upriver from Istalif.
