I forgot how common street beggars, mostly elderly and infirmed persons of both sexes, are in downtown Bishkek, particularly at the commercial hub at the intersection of Sovietskaya and Chui Prospect. Another place in which they congregate is in and around the Russian Orthodox Church, which significantly deteriorated after ethnic Russians and other Slavic peoples started to depart Kyrgyzstan with state independence in 1991.
