Tweaking the sonic imagination

What distinguishes the Jazz_Bishkek_Spring festival is its openness to creative exchanges between western jazz and Central Asian musical traditions. The musicians of Mizrob (top), an ensemble from Tajikistan, play traditional instruments, like tabla and oud, and “draw their inspiration from folk music,” according to festival organizers, whereas the “reckless improvisations” of Zarbituric, a French quartet, “ may burst into an intimate, sensual, and occasionally somber atmosphere.” See http://www.jazz.kg/Content.aspx for the rest of the performing line-up. The festival runs April 25-27.
